Newspapers showing
Expectant faces,
Fearful faces,
Peeping out of windows.

As if asking,
Office hours had JUST begun
But how could life be over?
Suddenly, definitely, precisely
And clinically for everyone?

Expectant faces,
Fearful faces,
As if asking
We were just balancing
The morning coffee in one hand,
And files in another,
But how could life be over?

A man made lightening struck,
From the sky
To plunge everything
And everyone in the eternal darkness.

Expectant faces,
Fearful faces,
As if asking
Would we melt together
With concrete and mortar?

Expectant faces,
Fearful faces,
As if asking
Was it our destiny
To be one with steel girdles?
And not with mother earth?
What had we done
In our lives,
To not to deserve a few feet
Below the earth?
But to evaporate
With the vapor of morning coffee?

  1. the only mistake they did was to be born in the dark times……..sorry for being curt…………but is not the truth always bitter?

  2. Alka,

Painful to recall but we can’t avoid past. This piece captured the feelings well. Thus all those feelings from globe united to move on with more strength .

Irony is, every day somewhere – a little tower breaks down to make news.

  3. I remember you posted this poem last year too. Really painful memories.

Though I slightly disagree with prancer. Times always have been dark. In those days, they were called Changez Khan, Mohd Gauri, Mohd Gaznavi and now they are Ladens, Bilal and Masuds.

  4. Prem, thanks for sharing your thoughts. And yes, everyday a little tower breaks somewhere.

Maverick, sometimes people pretends. This was a huge loss for them. Remembering it every year might be very painful for them.

Manish, yes, I posted it last year too.
