All the great love stories of the world are of unmarried couples. If they were married their love stories might not have been that great. In modern times, Our busy schedule rarely permits us to nurture “relationships.” But still from time to time we come across people who have more love for each other than legendary couple like Romeo & Juliet. They might not get into history books but nevertheless their love transcends any epic or time.
Here is a wife who faithfully took care of her husband for not one, two, three, four or five but nineteen years. Gertruda’s country, Poland, changed from communist dictatorship to democracy, the economy changed from socialist to capitalist, but this woman’s faith remained unchanged.
For 19 years she spoonfed her husband Grzebska and kept him moving sideways every hour to prevent bedsores. Grzebska sustained serious head injuries in an accident and slipped into coma in 1988. Doctors were not optimistic about his recovery. But Grzebska’s wife, Gertruda had never given up on him. She brought him home and took care of him religiously. And one fine day Grzebska has woken up from his 19-year-old slumber. What fascinates him most is cell phones!!! What he says about the globalized world:
“‘When I went into a coma there was only tea and vinegar in the shops, meat was rationed and huge petrol queues were everywhere,’ he told the Polish news channel TVN24.
‘Now I see people on the streets with cell phones and there are so many goods in the shops it makes my head spin. What amazes me is all these people who walk around with their mobile phones and never stop moaning – I’ve got nothing to complain about.'”

Also makes me wonder if a husband would have shown such devotion to his comatose wife for almost two decades?

Ritu, yes the lady is admirable. And what to say about the opposite? We are often fed men have their “need” and they have to move ahead in life. But I don’t know how men will behave in such circumstances.

It is an interesting news Alka and a fine thought.
But I am sure being an Indian you knew very well that these kinda ‘news features’ are rare in west and not in India. Since childhood we have heard of Shri Ram & Sita, Dharitrashtra & Gandhari, Satyawan & Savitri, in later period Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba (there are countless others I am sure). These are few names to count here. Above all we don’t have to go far as we can see our own parents and grand parents.
Nice soothing post. The lady had great patience which is missing from today’s world. SO many times she must’ve been disappointed, felt dejected, felt having lost the battle but she continued.

Hi,Alka…I think this is one amazing couple…tks for sharing the story. It also reminds me of an Uncle of mine,who demonstrated that faith can move mountains.
His wife was paralyzed,totally, and was bedridden for nearly 15 years. He took care of her,and their little daughter, without complaint. Even when we’d go to see them,he’d ensure that no-one felt sorry for them,instead, he’d converse in as lively a manner as anyone could, and, including his wife in all his talks. By God’s grace and his efforts, his wife finally began to walk-small steps,bigger steps…and,now is nearly normal- a case most doctors had given up. Even here, I think of this gentleman,I wonder why we,who are blessed to have our whole body functioning normally, continue to crib,crib and crib about everything-if nothing else, then we crib about the heat of the sun. grin…
wow wonderful love. These things amuse me, Life is so great and living it is greater, even when the rays of hope seem thin. I really pity those who end their own lives for nothing.
